CBD & University Students
University is a pivotal point in a young adult's life. This is typically when they are living on their own for the first time, or living with roommates. It’s when they learn about themselves on a fundamental level. This is also a time when they are introduced to drugs and alcohol. The combination of a new living environment, socializing with new people, drugs and alcohol as well as a full course load can cause stress on freshmen.
CBD has become a relief for anxiety and depression in this demographic. Students are finding themselves in highly stressful circumstances to maintain school/life balance. Juggling parental expectations, societal pressure as well as a challenging course load can cause major anxiety. A study conducted by the American College Health Association showed that 63% of college students in the US experienced overwhelming anxiety. From this, another 23% indicated that they were diagnosed by a professional as having an anxiety disorder. Instead of the prescription drug route, students are looking towards the natural benefits of CBD. Another study conducted at Syracuse University showed that 47% of them had used CBD to manage pain and/or anxiety. Because of its non-psychoactive qualities students are able to continue with their studies and reap the benefits simultaneously. Its non addictive qualities make it much more desirable versus opioid based antidepressants. The increase of prescription medication abuse amongst college students has considerably risen over the last decade. Having CBD as an alternative allows students to explore more natural ways to manage their new lifestyle.
Mental health is crucial to a student’s lifestyle. Although there is lots of awareness on campuses, the resources available still have room for improvement.
Post secondary is a very demanding time in a young adult’s life. There is an immense amount of pressure to succeed and to “figure out their lives” and so more students are turning to CBD to help cope with their day to day stressors. Creating a balanced lifestyle is key for a student's success.
Test anxiety can be overwhelming. No matter how many hours have been dedicated to studying, test day comes with a unique combination of pressure and nerves. This can cause temporary memory loss or “blanking out”. Taking CBD before an exam can activate the serotonin receptors in the brain, creating a more stable mental state. The resulting internal relaxation allows students to go into their exams with a clear mind, which can result in higher test scores.
Academic pressure and social situations aren’t the only factors that lead to stress in students. It is very common for them to strain themselves physically. Some are student athletes, play intramurally or are simply staying active. This all results in physical injury. They can suffer from discomfort as well as muscle and joint pain. Lower back pain is also quite common and is caused by sitting for far too long while studying. Unlike prescription pain medication, CBD relieves symptoms as well as decreases inflammation and can speed up the recovery process. It is also known to aid with sleep, allowing students to get more restful and regenerative slumber. Not only is this great physically but mentally as well.
Post secondary is a time of immense growth and learning, not only about specific studies, but about oneself. It is such an important time of self development and self discovery. However, it can also be very stressful and overwhelming.
