CBD and Tech Neck

With so many people working from home, and switching to a digital based job “tech neck” is becoming an issue. It refers to the pain and stiffness in the neck and shoulders from digital device use. Whether we are slumped forward over a smartphone, staring at a computer screen or looking up at our screens; our bodies are constantly trying to correct this unnatural posture.

Our cervical spine (the 7 vertebrae in our neck) was not designed for the modern digital age. At most it was designed to carry 10-12 pounds, but now it is responsible for carrying up to 60 pounds of extra weight, all from how we position ourselves daily. The prolonged effect of this pressure causes pain in the muscles, vertebrae, discs and ligaments in the neck and upper thoracic region. Both neck and shoulder pain are most common, but upper back pain, carpal tunnel and migraines are also symptoms of this condition.

Let’s break these down:

  • Stiff and/or Painful neck: Caused by the neck being in a downward position for an extended period of time. This puts a lot of additional strain on the spine.

  • Shoulder Pain: The hunching effect of being at a computer, or while on your phone can cause major shoulder pain.

  • Headaches: Tilting your head downward constantly looking at your phone, or too far forward reading your computer monitor can both cause debilitating headaches.

One way to mitigate this is through posture. We have adopted unhealthy posture that creates excessive weight on our necks. It can then affect the spine and even the hips. Make sure to give your shoulders a break from time to time and add some rolls in between meetings. Also making adjustments in how you sit can alleviate possible neck strain.  A standing desk is also a great option.

To take things one step further, adding CBD to your daily routine can help with the pain and discomfort caused by these symptoms. It is analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic and neuroprotective. This non-psychoactive addition allows you to reap its benefits without any intoxicating effects. CBD is derived from hemp, and unlike THC will not get you “high”. Rather, it alleviates muscle tension and soreness, supports the musculoskeletal, immune, nervous and gastrointestinal systems. It can be taken sublingually (under the tongue) or topically to affected areas. Both are highly effective in alleviating pain.

The incorporation of CBD and reassessment of posture can greatly mitigate the symptoms of “tech neck”. CBD’s anti-inflammatory, relaxing and mood balancing effects make it a perfect addition to your daily ritual. With more and more people working from home these days, these issues will only increase. It’s important to take care of your body and to supplement properly. Incorporating daily stretches and adjustments is also key in taking care of your neck and shoulders. It is important for all of us to take mindful breaks from our devices throughout the day, and take intentional moments with ourselves.
